What's Really Holding You Back?

We all have goals. We want to be healthier, become stronger leaders, build better relationships, advance our careers, or make a greater impact in our organizations and communities. Yet many of us find ourselves stuck, spinning our wheels, or wondering why progress feels so difficult.

When that happens, it may be time to pause and examine three critical areas that influence our ability to move forward: Attitude, Commitment, and Resources.

Attitude: The Story You're Telling Yourself

Attitude is more than simply being positive. It reflects your internal thoughts, beliefs, and emotional process about a situation.

The way we think about challenges often determines how we respond to them. Do we see obstacles as proof that we can't succeed, or as opportunities to learn and grow? Are we focused on what's possible, or on everything that could go wrong?

Sometimes the biggest barrier is not external at all. It is the conversation happening in our own minds. Fear, self-doubt, perfectionism, or limiting beliefs can quietly keep us from taking action.

Ask yourself:

  • What thoughts come to mind when I think about my goal?

  • What emotions do I attach to this challenge?

  • Are my beliefs helping me move forward or keeping me stuck?

A shift in attitude can often unlock possibilities that once felt out of reach.

Commitment: Where Your Energy Goes

Commitment is the amount of energy you intentionally allocate toward what matters most.

Many people say they want something, but their daily actions tell a different story. Commitment requires focus, consistency, and the willingness to prioritize what is important even when motivation fades.

The question isn't whether you want the outcome. The real question is whether your actions reflect your desire.

Consider:

  • How much time and energy am I dedicating to this goal?

  • What distractions are competing for my attention?

  • Am I willing to make short-term sacrifices for long-term success?

Commitment is demonstrated through action. Small, consistent steps often outperform bursts of motivation.

Resources: What Can You Draw Upon?

No one succeeds alone. We all have resources available to us, both internally and externally.

Internal Resources

These are the strengths and attributes you already possess:

  • Focus

  • Persistence

  • Courage

  • Knowledge

  • Resilience

  • Self-awareness

Your physical and emotional well-being also matter. Adequate sleep, healthy nutrition, meaningful relationships, and practices such as meditation or prayer can strengthen your ability to navigate challenges and remain grounded.

External Resources

These are the tools, systems, and people that support your success:

  • Strategic planning

  • Daily goals and routines

  • Mentors and coaches

  • Accountability partners

  • Supportive peers and allies

  • Access to information and learning opportunities

Often, we underestimate the resources already available to us. Other times, we hesitate to ask for help. Recognizing and leveraging resources can dramatically accelerate progress.

Where Are You Stuck?

The most important question is not whether you have a goal. It is understanding where the bottleneck exists.

Are you struggling with your attitude because fear, doubt, or limiting beliefs are creating resistance?

Are you facing a commitment challenge because your energy is being divided among too many competing priorities?

Or do you need additional resources, whether that means gaining knowledge, seeking support, building healthier habits, or creating a better plan?

Taking an honest inventory of these three areas can provide valuable insight.

A Simple Reflection Exercise

Rate yourself from 1 to 10 in each category:

Attitude: How supportive are my thoughts and beliefs toward this goal?

Commitment: How consistently am I investing time and energy toward this goal?

Resources: How effectively am I utilizing the internal and external resources available to me?

Once you've rated each area, identify the lowest score. That may be the place where your greatest opportunity for growth exists.

Final Thought

Growth rarely happens by accident. It happens when we become intentional about how we think, where we focus our energy, and what resources we leverage along the way.

The next time you feel stuck, don't immediately assume the goal is the problem. Instead, pause and ask yourself:

Is it my attitude, my commitment, or my resources that need attention?

The answer may reveal the very next step needed to move forward.
